melee (noun) people in confusion rushing and pushing each other.

A melee is a state of confusion in which a crowd of people rush about and push each other. 'In the melee I lost hold of my son's hand.' This means that as people rushed about in confusion, I lost hold of my son's hand. A melee may result from a crowd being confused and scared and running about for safety in all directions. A fight in public may result in a melee when people run about in fear. An explosion may cause a melee, when in confusion and fear, people runabout, pushing each other.

  • A sudden explosion in the public place scared the people, and everyone was running away in great fear. In the melee a boy was run over by the crowd and was badly hurt.
  • There was a fight during the election campaign between the supporters of the rival candidates. In the melee that followed, some fell down, and others walked over them.
