meretricious (adj) (of clothes, jewelry, etc.,) gaudy; attractive but cheap; (of statements) appearing attractive but not true.

Clothes or jewelry which appear attractive but have no real value are meretricious. Meretricious clothes are very flashy, very colorful, and show a lack of taste. A statement not based on truth is also meretricious.

  • Amy's jewelry was meretricious; it was quite flashy and attractive, but a closer look at it showed that they were not of any value.
  • Julie had an excellent taste in matters of dress and clothes. Her dresses and jewelry, though simple, reflected her taste. She would never go for meretricious things, as she did not like things looking flashy and cheap.
