meretricious (adj) (of clothes, jewelry, etc.,) gaudy; attractive but cheap; (of statements) appearing attractive but not true.
Clothes or jewelry which appear attractive but have no real value are meretricious. Meretricious clothes are very flashy, very colorful, and show a lack of taste. A statement not based on truth is also meretricious.
- Amy's jewelry was meretricious; it was quite flashy and attractive, but a closer look at it showed that they were not of any value.
