A metropolis is a very large city that is very important in a country or in a region. A metropolis is often the capital of the region or of the country. New York, London, Tokyo, New Delhi, Mumbai, etc., are examples of metropolises.

  • Urbanization results in cities growing into metropolises. As industries and businesses are concentrated in and around a city, its size and importance grows and it becomes a metropolis.
  • The growth of metropolises all over the world has led to the desertion of the country side, and to the concentration of population in and around big cities. The administration of these metropolises becomes a problem.
