mettle (noun) courage and determination.

The courage, determination, and ability to do something even in difficult conditions are mettle. A person of mettle has the ability and courage to do something successfully in spite of the difficulties they face. 'The game brought out their mettle.' This means they played with courage, ability, and determination and won the game in very difficult conditions. Mettle is the spirit needed to accomplish something.

  • Miriam showed her mettle when the hour came. Facing competition from formidable rivals, she won the race by her sheer determination and confidence.
  • In very tough conditions the mountaineers climbed up the mountain with great determination and courage. They took the task as a challenge to their mettle, and there they were on the top of the mountain in a record time.
