A small group, place, or society that has all the features of a big thing of a similar kind is a microcosm. The family, we say, is the microcosm of society. That is, the family is a smaller unit that has all the features of the bigger unit, namely the society. A town might present a microcosm of the country in which the town is, if it represents on a smaller scale, all that can be found in the country.
- A good movie should be able to present a microcosm of the society in which it is made. It must reflect all the living styles and conditions of the people that live in the society.
- The novels of great writers present a microcosm of the society they live in. Their books, if they are good, must reflect in a small way, the features of the society they live in.
