Mischance is bad luck. Your meeting the very person who you have wanted to avoid is purely a mischance, that is, ill-luck. A person being drowned in their attempt to save a drowning child is sheer mischance. That is, it is sheer bad luck.

  • It was sheer mischance that the wife saw her husband in the act of helping a woman. Though he did not know the woman at all, his wife suspected an affair between them.
  • The mischance was that exactly on the day of the match, he had a sprained ankle, and was declared unfit.
