miserly (adj) (of a person) unwilling to spend money; (of an amount of money) too small.

A miserly person hates spending money even on bare necessities. They hate to spend money and go on saving money they know not for what. They love money for money's sake. A miserly amount is a small amount which makes little difference to what one has or earns. A miserly hike in pay is a small hike in pay.

  • Though very wealthy, Harrison is too miserly to send his son to prestigious schools. He makes do with the neighborhood school because the education there is free.
  • Even the miserly wages Charles pays his workers, he pays very irregularly. As any other miser he hates to see money going out of his hands.
