missive (noun) letter.

A missive is a letter, especially a long or official one. A missive is usually a letter on an official matter from a person in an official position to another. Ambassadors carry missives, that is, letters from their government to the governments of the countries where they represent their countries.

  • A missive was delivered to the US ambassador in India from the President of the US by a special courier. The letter contained details about the new agreement on trade.
  • On reaching home, the lieutenant found a missive in his mail from the Lt. General. The letter wanted some important detail to be sent to the Lt. General.
