munificent (adj) extremely generous.
A munificent person is extremely generous. They are very liberal in making donations and in helping others financially. A large donation for a public cause, say, for the setting up of a hospital, a college, a stadium, etc., is a munificent gesture. An example of a munificent action is setting up a charitable foundation for helping the poor.
- Andrew Carnegie after whose name stands the Carnegie Institute of Technology in Pittsburgh was very munificent. His philosophy was to live rich and die poor, and towards the end of his life, he gave away a large quantity of his wealth for public causes.
- The munificent industrialist thought he should give back to the society at least a part of what he had got from it. So he set up a modern hospital where the poor are treated free.
