parameter (noun) (usually) set of limits controlling the way something should be done.

You have to operate within certain parameters if you have to work within certain clearly stated limits. When, for example, an enquiry committee is setup, it is clearly told of the aspects it has to enquire into. These are the parameters within which it has to operate. When you compare two or more things, there are certain points forming the basis of your comparison. These bases are parameters.

  • 'What are the parameters of your assessment of the candidates' merit?' asked one of the interviewers of the other when they sat together to conduct interviews. The other suggested that the experience and qualifications are the important parameters, to judge a candidate's eligibility.
  • Most often performances of actors are judged without any parameters to measure their talent. We go mostly by their appeal to our hearts.
