parlance (noun) the way words are used by a particular group of people, or by a particular profession.

Parlance is the way the people of a particular group or of a profession use certain words. Medical parlance is the way doctors and nurses use words with special meanings. For example in medical parlance, case and complaint refer to the nature of the disease. In legal parlance, a complainant is a plaintiff.

  • Stars and galaxies refer to actors and actor groups in movie parlance. These words have become so common that stars and galaxies are used more with their movie meanings than with their original meanings.
  • In medical parlance pyrexia is the word for ordinary fever, and malignant tumor is the word for cancer. When doctors use these words even while talking to patients they get confused and scared.
