peroration (noun) 1 concluding part of speech in which the main points of the speech are summed up; 2 Long speech sounding very impressive but pointless.

The concluding part of a speech in which the important points of the speech are summed up by the speaker is a peroration. ‘The listeners felt the peroration was not necessary as the points made by the speaker were very few.’ This means that the points made by the speaker were very few; there was no need for the speaker to sum them up in the conclusion. A long boring speech is also a peroration. A peroration sounds very impressive, but there aren’t any significant points in it.

  • The speech was certainly impressive and solid and the peroration was equally so, with the speaker making an effective summary of his points in his speech.
  • His speeches never draw large crowds, because he is noted for his perorations which do not contain any points of importance.
