perpetrate (verb) commit a crime.

When a person does something seriously wrong or very immoral, he perpetrates a crime. A person who perpetrates a murder is one who commits a murder. A person who perpetrates a theft is one who commits a theft.

  • He was shocked that his very close friend perpetrated the crime of kidnapping his child and demanding a huge ransom.
  • Someone on the staff of the company has perpetrated the crime of leaking out crucial information about the company. Once they are detected they will be severely punished for committing the crime.
