pessimism (noun) belief that only bad things happen in life and we are here to suffer.

The feeling that life is all bad and only bad things happen in life is pessimism. If a person believes that all our attempts will only fail, they believe in pessimism. Pessimism is a gloomy outlook on life and what is going to happen. 'There is pessimism about the performance of the team in the coming match.' This means that there is little hope of the team performing well in the coming match.

  • Given the judiciary system in the country, there is pessimism about real culprits being punished. The law is such that criminals make use of it to escape punishment.
  • They strongly believe that as the other team is superior to them they have no chance of winning the match against it. This pessimism of the players is bound to spoil their chances of winning.
