Pharmacists in the olden days found the pestle, a small stick with a round end, a useful tool for grinding, mashing, and pounding chemicals to make medicines. No pharmacists could be without a pestle and a mortar.

  • If the mason's tool is the trowel, the pharmacist's tool in the olden days was the pestle. There was nothing they could do without it, as they had to powder chemicals with it to make a prescription.
  • The pharmacist pounded the pestle in the mortar with a rhythmic movement. It gave him some pleasure too.
