petty (adj) small and unimportant.

A petty quarrel is a quarrel over a small and unimportant matter. A petty theft is stealing something of not a very high value. A petty matter is a trivial matter. A petty official is an official with not much power.

  • A good number of major wars have had their cause in petty matters. History is full of examples of silly matters blowing up into major wars.
  • Their litigation which lasted for five years was over a petty matter. One of them encroached a few inches into the other's area, and that led to a major litigation.
