pharisaical (adj) strictly adhering to religious rules and traditions.

To be pharisaical is to insist too much on religious rules without following them in spirit. It is also to be self-righteous and hypocritical. Pharisaical people think that they are religiously right. A pharisaical person adheres strictly to religious beliefs and considers them unbreakable, even when they are harmful to others.

  • Jesus in all his preaching was very critical of the pharisaical people of his time and this made them very angry. They could not tolerate Jesus exposing their hypocrisy and self-righteous attitude.
  • He is pharisaical in his behavior and uttering. He often talks in self-righteous manner and is angry when others point out his hypocrisy.
