phobia (noun) strong and unreasonable fear or hatred of something.

A person has a phobia of something if he has unreasonable fear or hatred of something, often as a result of a psychological condition. Claustrophobia, for example, is a fear of enclosed places. People with this phobia feel nervous or uncomfortable in close and enclosed places. Agoraphobia is a fear of open places.

  • Right from his childhood, Charlton has a phobia about heights. He is afraid of looking down from a balcony, or of climbing up a tall tree.
  • His phobia about being left alone in a closed place is very strange. He begins to feel uneasy the minute he enters a cramped place.
