pigment (noun) coloring material.

The natural coloring material in animals and plants that gives the color to their skin, blood, etc., is pigment. The substance that is responsible for the color of the blood of animals, leaves, etc., is pigment. Hemoglobin, for example, is the pigment that makes blood red. A pigment is also a dry, colored powder, which is mixed with liquids to make paint. The painter gets the colors in his picture by using pigments. Pigments are used in making dyes.

  • The painter mixed some material with egg yolk to get the pigment that gave a creamy white color to the background of the painting.
  • Chlorophyll is the pigment which gives the green color to the leaves.
