pillage (verb) plunder.

When a conquering army pillages a place, they rob the people of their belongings there and damage the place. History is full of examples of invading armies pillaging the conquered places. The Goths and the Vandals pillaged the Roman empire; that is, they plundered the empire and caused a lot of destruction to the temples and other buildings there.

  • The Muslim armies invading India during the Middle Ages pillaged a number of temples. The temples were all destroyed and the valuables in them were carried away.
  • The town was in ruins after the soldiers had pillaged it. After killing whoever they came across, they plundered the churches and other buildings and carried away the valuables in them.
