pillory (verb) [Usually passive ] criticize strongly in public.

When someone is pilloried, they are criticized strongly in public. ‘The press pilloried him regularly for his wrong policies.’ This means that the press regularly criticized him openly for his wrong policies. A writer is pilloried if they are attacked by critics or readers; if they are found fault with for some defect or the other.

  • The opposition pilloried the government for pursuing wrong policies in dealing with foreign affairs. The opposition could see nothing to their liking in them.
  • The meeting pilloried the governments lending support to terrorism by allowing their camps on their soil and by providing them all cooperation.
