pine (verb) long for; yearn.
If a person pines for someone they are sad, less active or ill because they are separated from someone whom they love. You pine if you become very ill or week because you miss someone you love very much and want to be with them. A mother pines for her child and the child, for the mother, if they are separated; that is, they are sad and are ill or weak because they miss each other and cannot bear the separation.
- Separated from her mother the young girl pined for her and in course of time became very weak and sad. She showed signs of quick recovery once she was allowed to live with her mother.
- The young mother missed her child very much. She pined for it, and no medicine could cure her of her illness. The doctor concluded that the restoration of her child alone could cure her.
