pitfall (noun) unsuspected danger.

A pitfall is a danger or difficulty that you do not suspect will happen while doing something. While making a bargain, your being cheated or your making a mistake is a pitfall. In organizing a huge business, there might be pitfalls, that is, problems or difficulties which we suddenly experience. While traveling in a foreign country, we might face pitfalls as we are strangers to the customs and laws there and may make mistakes causing us troubles. Such are pitfalls.

  • Overconfidence is likely to cause pitfalls, because in our too much belief in ourselves, we may overlook the sudden occurrence of certain problems.
  • The foreign policy of the US in respect of Korea presented the US a number of pitfalls. It could not foresee the problems its soldiers might face in the totally unfamiliar atmosphere of a foreign country.
