placate (verb) appease.
When you placate someone you appease them. You try to make an angry person less angry or not angry at all, when you placate them. A management may placate the workers by yielding to their demands; that is, the management yields to their demands in the hope the workers may not agitate. You placate someone if you try to make them stop feeling angry.
- The management’s willingness to meet the workers’ demands half the way did not placate the workers. They would not be satisfied until all their demands were met.
- His offer of a diamond necklace as a birth day gift succeeded in placating his wife who had been very angry with him for being close to his secretary. She was all smiles when she saw the gift and was no longer angry.
