placebo (noun) harmless un-medicated substance given as medicine to patient to make them feel that they are given medicine.

A placebo is a substance without any medicinal value and given to a patient just to make them feel that they are being given medicine, because they think they need medicine when they do not. When doctors think that the patient does not need any medicine they give placebos, that is, unmedicated substances, to patients just for their satisfaction. These substances look like medicines but do not contain any medicine. Doctors use placebos during trials of new drugs.

  • The doctor concluding that the patient did not need any medicine gave her a placebo just to keep her under the impression that she was given medicine.
  • Placebos are used during the testing of new medicines just to know the efficacy of the new drug. If a patient given the new medicine and another one given the placebo react in the same way the new drug has no special effect. This is the conclusion.
