platonic (adj) (of relationships) purely spiritual and friendly but not sexual.

Platonic love is just spiritual affection without any sexual contact. Platonic relationship between a man and a woman is just a friendly relationship and may imply liking for each other without involving sex. A platonic affair is intellectual or spiritual connection without being sensual or involving sex.

  • Henry claims that his admiration for Clara is purely platonic. His relations with her, he insists, are not at all sensual.
  • Simons was disappointed when Sarah told him she was content to admire him for what he is; handsome and intelligent. She made it clear that hers was platonic love for him and that she did not look for any sexual relationship.
