plausible (adj) (of an excuse or explanation) appearing to be true and honest but not really so.

A plausible explanation appears to be true but may not be true. A plausible excuse is a cooked up excuse. A plausible cause is more likely to be untrue than true.

  • The claim of the major power that it is sending its troops to the other country to restore democracy there is only a plausible explanation. Its real intention is to gain control over the natural reserves there.
  • His plausible excuse for his refusing a loan to his friend was that by lending him money he would only be encouraging his friendís extravagance. The fact is that he had strong doubts about recovering the money.
