preamble (noun) introduction to a book, document, etc.

A preamble is an introductory statement explaining what a book, document, talk, etc., are about. It states the purpose too of the book, document, etc. For example, the constitution of a country has a preamble, in which the objectives, purpose, etc., of the constitution are stated. A speech or a lecture may also have a preamble in which the speaker or the lecturer may explain briefly what the speech or lecture is about.

  • The preamble to the constitution of India, states the objectives of the constitution, namely the basic freedoms that a citizen of the country has a right to.
  • His badly organized lecture had no preamble, and the audiences were confused for some time about what aspects of the subject he was going to deal with in his lecture.
