precipice (noun) steep side of a mountain or a cliff.

A precipice is a very steep side of a tall mountain or a cliff. If you move to the edge of the precipice you fall headlong into the space below, so standing on the edge of a precipice is very dangerous, as what comes next is mere deep space. The top of the cliff of a steep mountain is a precipice.

  • I shuddered to think what would happen to the boy standing on the precipice if he took one step further. He would fall headlong into the deep valley along the steep mountainside.
  • The eagle stood majestically on the precipice surveying the mountain and the vast area around.
