precipitate (adj) [of actions] done in haste, without enough thought.

A precipitate action is a hasty action done thoughtlessly and without enough care. A precipitate decision is a decision taken without proper thought or care. ‘It would be precipitate to buy such an expensive thing now.’ This means that buying such an expensive thing now would be a hasty action, and may have bad consequences.

  • The minister’s supporters thought that his resignation from the government was a precipitate action. They felt that he should have thought well before taking such a big step.
  • The military intervention of the US in Vietnam proved to be a precipitate action. The US suffered a huge loss of men and material in the process. It should have thought well about the consequences before taking such a step.
