preclude (verb) prevent or make something impossible

When rain precludes a match it prevents a match from taking place. Age precludes a person’s participation in a celebration if their age prevents them from participating in the celebration. ‘His illness precludes his undertaking such a long journey.’ This means that his illness prevents him from going on such a long journey. Heat precludes any outdoor activity if the heat makes it impossible for us take up any outdoor activity.

  • The threat of terrorist activity precluded any heavy tourist inflow into the Kashmir Valley last season. The risk a visit to the valley meant prevented many from visiting the Valley.
  • Though talented, his laziness precluded him from reaching great heights in his career. It prevented him from using his talent to the full.
