predecessor (noun) person earlier in a job than another

A predecessor precedes another person in a post or a position. Bill Clinton is the predecessor of George Bush, that is, Bill Clinton had been the president of the US before George Bush took over as the president. A person who has held a position before another person is the second personís predecessor. The earlier vice chancellor of a university is the predecessor of the one who takes over from him as the next vice chancellor.
