predetermine (verb) decide something in advance to avoid its happening by chance
When you predetermine something, you decide it in advance so that it is not left to chance. When you take steps in advance to see that things happen according to your plan, you predetermine it. When you want to start a project, you predetermine its costs by estimating the costs accurately and get ready with the money.
When we feel that something is decided by fate and nothing can change it, we say that it has been predetermined. Predetermined in this sense is destined; that is, fate has determined it. ‘Their marriage was predetermined to be short lived.’ This means that their marriage was destined to be short lived.
When circumstances play a role in the happening of something, we say it is predetermined.
- The genes a baby inherits from its parents predetermine the sex of a baby, the type of adult it grows into, the attitudes it develops, etc.
- Fatalists, that is, those who believe in a fate guiding and controlling our lives believe that every thing that happens to us is predetermined and that there is nothing we could do to reverse or prevent it.
