predicament (noun) difficult or unpleasant situation

A predicament is a difficult or an unpleasant situation in which it is difficult to decide what to do. You are in a predicament if you are in a dilemma, that is, a situation in which making a choice is very difficult. A countryís financial predicament is its financial difficulties with no way to end them. You are in a predicament if you have to choose between killing a critically wounded enemy soldier or to save him from death in a humanitarian manner.

  • My predicament is whether to marry the girl who loves me like mad or the one who I am after. The girl who has lost her heart for me is threatening to commit suicide if I donít marry her.
  • The US having committed itself to the removal of Saddam Hussein finds itself in a predicament. It hasnít been able to restore peace in Iraq by its military presence, and is unable to decide how long it should continue there.
