When you preen yourself you try to make your appearance very tidy and attractive, may be by spending a long time before the mirror. You preen yourself if you are pleased and are proud of your appearance or of something you have done. When a person preens on something, they are proud of what they have done. When a bird preens itself it makes its feathers smooth using its beak.

  • ‘Stop preening you in front of the mirror,’ said the mother to the daughter, seeing the youngster spending a long time in front of the mirror, proud of her looks.
  • After the killing a mouse with one stroke he preened himself. He looked proudly at others as though he had done something great.
