premonition (noun) foreboding; forewarning

A feeling that something, especially something bad is going to happen is a premonition. A sign usually taken as something, usually unpleasant, is going to happen is a premonition. If a bad dream is followed by a bad event the bad dream is a premonition to the bad event. A sign that is taken as the indication of something happening, usually unpleasant, is a premonition.

  • When he received the news of his friendís death in a plane crash, Jamison felt that the milk can dropping from his hand earlier that morning and the milk spilling all over was a premonition of the disaster.
  • Eclipses are taken as premonitions of disasters. At least they were, in the olden days. People feared that eclipses indicated bad things to come.
