premonitory (adj) indicating a future happening, usually an unpleasant one

The appearance of a comet in the olden days was considered premonitory; that is, a warning of something bad going to happen. Eclipses were thought to be premonitory. A disease has premonitory signs too. That is, the symptoms of diseases are premonitory of the disease.

  • When he saw vultures hovering above he thought it premonitory of some evil happening; and sure enough a little ahead on his way he saw his enemy waiting to kill him.
  • She felt that her chest pains were premonitory to some serious heart condition, so without wasting further time, she consulted a doctor, who ruled out any serious disorder.
