prerogative (noun) exclusive right or privilege

A prerogative is a special right a person enjoys because of their importance or position. The head of the majority party in a legislature has the prerogative of selecting the members of their cabinet. That is, it is their special right to select whoever they want as their cabinet colleagues. Making appointments is the prerogative of the personnel manager of a company. It is for him to select and appoint candidates for the various posts. The president has the prerogative of appointing his personal secretary.

  • The parliament has the prerogative of making laws for the country. It alone has this special right.
  • It is the prerogative of the elected representative to lay down the policies of governance of a country, and the official have the responsibility to implement them.
