presage (verb) foretell; predict

Heavy clouds presage rain, if they indicate the chances of rain. In the past people believed that eclipses presaged ruin. That is, they believed that eclipses indicated ruin and trouble. An incident presages something if we think that the incident presages something, especially unpleasant, is going to happen.

  • The appearance of a comet in the olden days was believed to presage ruin. People on seeing the comet feared that something bad was going to happen.
  • The frightened faces of the children presaged severe punishment from the teacher.
