proletariat (noun) member of the working class.

The proletariat, in socialist language, is the people of the working classes who work for wages and salaries and do not own any property. Marx insisted that the proletariat should have the right to the fruits of their labor. That is, he wanted the working classes, especially those worked in factories or on the farm for capitalists or landlords to have their rightful share in the production.

  • From the early twentieth century till the late nineties, proletariat in Europe was very active in demanding their rightful share in production, for, they argued, without their, that is, the working classes’ labor, nothing could be produced.
  • The rise of the proletariat in the early twentieth century was the result of the oppression of the proletariat by the capitalists and the landlords. The working classes were really denied justice.
