proliferate (verb) grow in number or quantity and spread rapidly.

When something proliferates it increases or grows quickly and spreads to many places. Detective fiction proliferated in the middle twentieth century. This means detective novels and stories were written in large number and were seen every where during the middle of the twentieth century. Bars proliferate in an area, if a large number of bars are opened in an area. If the computer languages proliferate, they increase rapidly and begin to be used in many places and for many applications.

  • Mobile phones are proliferating at a fast pace all over the world. The number of cell phone users is increasing by a few thousands by the day.
  • The bacteria causing the disease proliferated in the area because of a lack of hygiene, and because of their fast and excessive growth, a large number of people contracted the disease.
