prolong (verb) extend.

When you prolong something you make it last longer. When you prolong your stay you extend your stay; you continue your stay beyond a period. Medicines sometimes prolong life; that is, they lengthen the life of a person. The period for the repayment of a loan is prolonged if it is extended.

  • While the drugs for cancer prolong life, they also prolong suffering. Cancer in most cases is incurable, and all that the drugs can do is to lengthen the span of life, reducing pain partly or totally.
  • He had to prolong his stay in the US by a week, as the machinery he wanted to buy was not readily available.
