propagate (verb) 1 [of an idea, belief, and information] spread 2 produce new plants from a parent plant.

When you propagate an idea, belief or information you spread it among a number of people. A prophet wants his ideas to be propagated, that is, to be spread among as many people as possible. The disciples of Jesus propagated his message of love and kindness, that is, they spread his message among a number of people. Plants propagate in favorable conditions. That is, in favorable conditions plants grow or multiply from a parent plant.

  • The message of the Buddha was propagated in a number of south east Asian countries by his disciples, and mainly by Emperor Asoka, and as a result a number of countries in the region are Buddhist.
  • Dr Joseph Lister discovered that bacteria propagated in unhygienic conditions and insisted on hospital cleanliness as a part of the proper procedure for treatment of patients.
