prophylactic (adj) Able to prevent disease.

A prophylactic medicine is a medicine which can prevent a disease from attacking a person. A device which can prevent a disease is a prophylactic. Vaccination is a prophylactic process, because it prevents diseases from entering human body. A vaccine is a prophylactic.

  • The condom is a prophylactic device because it prevents people having sex from sexually transmitted diseases.
  • In spite of the prophylactic measures we take, diseases continue to trouble us. Perhaps the prophylactic measures that are known now are not effective enough.
