propitiate (verb) appease.
You propitiate a person, who is very angry with you, if you do something to make them less angry with you. If you try to reduce the unpleasantness between you and someone else by doing something that might please them, you propitiate them. We try to propitiate gods by making them offerings. To propitiate is to appease or to placate.
- There are still some tribes who believe that the angry gods can be propitiated by animal sacrifices. They think that natural calamities like floods, drought, and earthquakes are due to the anger of the gods, and that the gods can be pleased with animal sacrifices.
