propulsive (adj) driving forward

The fuel in a vehicle has propulsive power, that is, it has the power to drive the vehicle forward. When we say that petrol has more propulsive power than steam we mean that petrol has greater power to drive a vehicle forward than steam. A strong desire gives a person the propulsive power to go ahead and do a thing.

  • The propulsive power that drives planes forward in air is not at all powerful enough to take rockets into space.
  • The propulsive power of liquid hydrogen is greater that that of any petroleum product. That is why it is used to send rockets into space.
