prosaic (adj) dull and just ordinary

When a speech, piece of writing or a piece of art is prosaic, it is dull and unimaginative. It is even boring, and has nothing exciting about it. A movie is prosaic if it is uninteresting and in no way extraordinary.

  • We had to sit through his hour-long speech, which was prosaic. He had nothing original to say and was repeating himself most of the time.
  • Her teaching did not attract her students, as it was very prosaic. There was nothing in it to interest them by way of lucid explanation or an occasional joke.
