proscribe (verb) banish

When a government proscribes a book, it banishes it. The sale and reading of the book is prohibited. If a government proscribes a person, they have to leave the country forever. Some scenes in some movies are proscribed if they are censored.

  • When the government proscribed the book, intellectuals opposed it, as they felt it violated the freedom of expression.
  • Boris Pasternak’s book Dr Zhivago, which was made into a great movie, was proscribed in the Soviet Union by the then communist government. The citizens of the then USSR had no opportunity to read it.
