protract (verb) prolong

When you protract something you prolong it. Negotiations are protracted if they are continued for a longer time than usual. If you delay something longer than usual, you protract it. You protract a dispute if you donít settle it early enough but continue it.

  • The battle protracted for far too long, and the soldiers on both the sides were weary and were in no mood to fight any more.
  • He protracted the negotiations just to avoid coming to a settlement and gain time. He prolonged it so long that the other party decided not to attend the negotiations.
