ramshackle (noun) (of buildings, vehicles, furniture, etc.) in a bad condition and in need of repair; (of an organization or system) not functioning well and is likely to be closed.

A car is in a ramshackle condition if it is damaged and is in need of repair. Furniture that is very old and needs repair is in a ramshackle. A ramshackle building is an old building, which may collapse any moment unless it is repaired.

  • The ramshackle car in which they traveled gave them a lot of trouble on the way. It broke down several times and had to be repaired, so arrived at the venue very late.
  • The ramshackle building waiting for repairs provides shelter for petty thieves, criminals and others of the sort. The owner is getting ready to have the old building pulled down as soon as possible and a new one built in its place.
